Dec 042018

My penultimate month didn’t have the most auspicious start. On my first run this month — my third of a week-long stay on Vashon Island near Seattle — I saw my first SURF SCOTER of the year. As I scoured a large flock of American Wigeons to find the male Eurasian Wigeon I’d seen the previous day, I failed to see a pot hole and — *pop* — rolled my ankle. I completed the 4.5 mile run and walked tenuously on it the next couple days.

I almost pushed it through a long run a couple days after but then — because, of course — I succumbed to my daughter’s head cold.

After an 9-day break from running, I braved the sub-freezing temperatures back in D.C. to tally HERMIT THRUSH, AMERICAN KESTREL and the highlight LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL .

Alas, I couldn’t produce Pine Siskin or Purple Finch, which have been popping up all over the district. I ran 73 miles this month.
